It’s the time of year when those in the know decide which colours are going to be hot for autumn. Of course, the decisions were made back in the spring during several fashion weeks, and so buyers and designers have been getting their collections ready to launch on the high street.

It seems that this autumn is a very contemplative and muted shade, more earthy than we’ve seen for a few seasons. Berry colours are always a major part of any autumn palette and this year’s Amethyst Orchid and the soft pink of Cashmere Rose are fiercely feminine without being insipid.

Neutrals are definitely in, with the muted shades of Desert Sage, a cool greenish-grey providing a handy base for most outfits to build on. The stronger and bolder Stormy Weather is another blue-grey shade that would look good on a rainy day in the office or whenever you need to make a strong statement.

Nature always influences the Pantone palettes and in 2015 there’s a warming, comforting golden shade of yellow – the very autumnal Oak Buff. Oak Buff is the perfect colour for a cashmere jumper, all soft and luxurious, cosy and warm. On the same page is Marsala – a winey red-brown that adds a little cool earthiness to an outfit. The red tones make the brown less drab and bring out the last rays of autumnal sunshine in any outfit.

Lovers of green will be catered for with the slightly utilitarian olive green that’s Dried Herb. Green is a colour that we think is really under-used in fashion, and shouldn’t just be relegated to cargo pants and military chic, so we’re pleased to see this classy shade making an appearance in the shops.

Blue is also on offer with the elegant  Biscay Bay splashes up against more heated tones with its cool touch, combining the serene qualities of blue with the invigorating aspects of green. This cool and confident tone inspires thoughts of soothing tropical waters, transporting us to a place that is pleasant and inviting.

It’s not all muted – celebrate the retro appeal of orange with Cadmium Orange – not brash enough to make you look washed out, but colourful enough to add a little bit of glamour to your day. If you’re not brave enough to dress up in orange, add a scarf or accessories and work it along with one of the more muted shades.

The muted earthiness of many of the colours makes them perfect for make-up too. Try layering a little Cashmere Rose and Amethyst Orchid for party eyes, or for everyday glam you could go for a warm Desert Sage with Oak Buff. Highlight natural tones with Cashmere Rose or Marsala effect.
