A day at the races used to be an elite treat, but with Aintree and Ascot attracting reality TV crowds and hen parties, the dress codes have been subject to a certain amount of derision over the past few years.

One event that still manages to retain an air of class is Glorious Goodwood, the Sussex race event which claims to be the ‘perfect opportunity for ladies to show off this Season’s latest fashions.”

Discouraging a sea of fake tan and OTT fascinators, Goodwood turns its nose up at tacky and embraces understated glamour and elegance. More floaty boho than brassy body con, Goodwood is definitely a little more…dare we say it….classy!

So, what do you actually wear to a posh event like Goodwood? It depends where you’re sitting, a bit like Ascot and other events. Different enclosures have different rules, and no matter how careful you are, there’s no guarantee that a TOWIE regular or a Made in Chelsea darling won’t be in attendance.

In the Richmond Enclosure, it’s a little bit formal, you’ll be encouraged to sport a nice hat with your designer frock (although it’s not essential). Go with elegant, understated style, and don’t make the mistake of thinking that just because a hat is encouraged, it has to be showy or huge. Cute pillboxes, understated fascinators and effortless style are the order of the day…brassy and attention-seeking will be frowned upon.

In some of the other enclosures, it’s a lot less formal, although still classy. Ladies Day at Goodwood is stylish rather than showy. Unlike Ladie’s Day at Ascot, which has turned into more of a parade of cocktail dresses and heels as day wear, mixed with Lambrini and fake tan, Goodwood likes to think of itself as being a little bit Boho. It’s all about pretty flowing dresses and skirts, on-trend maxi dresses, understated hats and wedges. Tempting though it might be to strap on your silliest Louboutins or Choos and strut around – don’t. You’ll only sink right into the turf and completely ruin them, if not your image when you fall flat on your face!
So – with understated elegance and boho as the theme, and a weather forecast that promises a slightly cooler temperature than we’re used to in recent weeks, we’d also suggest taking a pair or Wingz to slip on under your dress to cover your arms when the sun goes in….
