Royal wedding

So, the big question on all fashion lovers’ minds this week is…what will Meghan Markle be wearing when she marries Prince Harry in just over a week’s time? A Royal wedding is a big draw for fashionistas as well as royalists and we can’t wait to see what she wears on her big day.

The Royal wedding dress – who will design it?

The shock news last week was that the hot favourite, Vera Wang, is out of the running. Vera, who’s long been loved by celebrity A-listers and has worked with many of them to design gorgeous custom wedding dresses, confirmed reports that Meghan won’t be wearing one of her creations on May 19th.

She said, when asked, “Other than wearing us, and she’s not wearing us – there are two ways for her to go: American or British,” a strong hint that Meghan is likely to grace the Royal wedding in something that recognises her new family situation, by choosing a UK fashion designer to make the dress of her dreams. Vera explained, “Given her new position, her new status, and her new role, she’ll very well go British.”

Firmly in the running for the job is Erdem, a Canadian designer based in London . Meghan has worn Erdem before, and has her own Canadian background, so the collaboration would be a win-win for them. Nothing has been confirmed yet…

It’s very likely that we can expect British a designer to work their magic for this Royal wedding  – but do we think the dress itself will be traditionally ‘royal’ or more on-trend? Rumour has it that she will be going for something a bit more modern than her sister-in-law Kate, who opted for a classic, romantic design. She’s also expected to be wearing white, although her status as a divorcee did make a shade of off-white a possibility. Royal brides have been expected to wear white since the days of Queen Victoria, who set the trend when she married Albert.

Camilla obviously didn’t get the Royal wedding = white frock memo but given that her wedding was in a register office and very much a private occasion, the white dress stipulation probably didn’t apply to her and Charles’ nuptials!

What’s the style prediction?

We’re wondering whether the Royal wedding dress will be stunning and sleeveless or elegantly sleeved like Kate’s. The trend for wedding gowns with feature sleeves is still going strong, and we loved what Kate did with her dress in 2011.  Our Lace Wingz are a nod to the pretty sleeve detail we adored. It’s likely that gorgeous Meghan’s style is less traditional than Kate’s, and she’s marrying someone lower down the official pecking order than William, so we’re hoping to see some more interesting details, maybe a shorter length, something a bit fitted, perhaps?

With her fashion credentials and going on past photo-calls with Harry she isn’t afraid to experiment a bit with her fashion choices, but whether she’d be brave enough to go too out-there on a day when she’s going to be watched by millions is debatable!

What do you think? Any predictions? And will you be watching the big day on 19th May?
